| Hello and welcome to a topic about the Best Book of the Millennium! (As voted on Amazon.com, I think.)
Well, most have heard of it, and plenty more have read it. Have you? Then post your thoughts!P.S. I beat you to it, Morgoth and W. =|/-\|=

| x-( You did. As you can probably tell by my display name, my favorite is Quenta Silmarillion. Although it's the least-known, in my opinion it's the best. I also really like Unfinished Tales and other books like that. Also, I have heard that Tolkien intended that The Lord of the Rings be one book, instead of three. | |

| Oh, Mo. You've earned yourself my displeasure. Morgoth: Ah yes, the display name tells it all. But notice how Mo got around the one-book issue by saying "installment" instead of "book"... Tolkien did intend it to be one book, though, before a paper shortage cut that idea into three. -|W|G|- | |

| Yep. Tolkien wasn't very happy.
The Silmarillion and The Two Towers might be my favorites, I guess.

| You know, a while ago I realized that the language in the book didn' make it official, it made the whole series really hard to understand. The core concept and plot were both brilliant, but I personally found Tolkein's writing style so heard to read I didn't even make it through the Silmarillion.
Also, I felt the lack of a main villian annoying. The Silmarillion's inclusion of Mogroth left me more than a little annoyed, as I felt it totally killed Sauron's "ultimate villian" effect...

| Well, the Silmarillion was supposed to have predated the rest of the books, and I think that was said to be Tolkien's personal favorite, as it had all the lore, history, etc. In any case, Morgoth was the original LoTR "ultimate villain"... though surprisingly Sauron lasted longer. I guess it's a little like Megatron and Starscream. (The old ones, not the weirdo new ones.) -|W|G|- | |

| Still, it wouldn't have been to hard to just have made ONE main villian. Just replace "Sauron" with "Magroth". There's practically no difference, except a few lines about Sauron in the Silmarillion. | |

| No, no, they're not the same. Morgoth was the ultimate ruler in the beginning. He had the Silmaril gems which people eventually stole. Sauron was his servant, who took over once Morgoth was imprisoned (I think). Sauron was the so-called "Lord of the Rings" - he forged the One Ring and was linked to it, and became the Great Eye in his later days.

| I know, but I feel that was a bad idea. It gets rid of the presence of one main villian. It's all together better, in my opinion, to just have one single villian. | |

| It would tie the story together, true, but I don't feel it diminishes Sauron's presence, let alone Morgoth's. Sauron is depicted as the successor to Morgoth's mystique and power.

| I know, but... oh, whatever.
Of course, this brings up a new question: Who was the better villian, Sauron or Magroth?

| Sadly, I'm undecided until I figure out what the guy looked like... it's hard to beat creepy knight w/ ring/floating eye that sees all, and they're both too awsome to be compared based on villiany.
So, out of the three members who have ever posted in this topic, Mogroth wins.

| Picture of Morgoth.
Picture of Sauron.
Sauron is something like Morgoth's anorexic successor.
The end.

| Spectral's explanation of Iraemancer's explanation is the correct explanation.
Sauron was some human who was Morgoth's deputy/errand-runner.

That Mouth of Sauron human? Well, let's put it in analogy form.
- Code:
-
Morgoth:Sauron :: Sauron:Mouth-of-Sauron That is, if I used the analogy symbols correctly.=|/-\|=
