Farsight

Hello, all, and welcome to the RPG. This RPG takes place in an uncomfortably familiar setting, also called Farsight. Here, World War Three is imminent... and only two organizations can stop it. But what happens when the two are enemies?

Rules/Regulations

~ Post your character sheets in the separate discussion topic, not in this RPG. Your characters are subject to my approval - if they contain inappropriate or impossible elements, I will delete them.
~ NO god-moderation, in any circumstances. If any appears, it will be deleted.
~ Respect natural laws. This may be a subdimension, but most or all of the laws of physics/chemistry still apply.
~ Respect the NPCs. Be sure that you have my permission before using any!
~ Respect other players. All normal forum rules apply as well.
~ Have fun!

Extended Description It is 2103 C.E. (A.D.) on Earth. Two important organizations, the chemical company Otherwise and the media watchdog group Alert, have discovered that the equivalent of a Third World War is imminent, and may destroy the planet. Otherwise is concentrating its considerable resources on finding out why the war is happening, and what it can do when the war happens. Alert is exerting all its power to try to halt the war. But their efforts are beginning to come into conflict with governments across the globe... and each other. And some of their findings hint at the hidden workings of a mysterious and eerie fourth party. Only one side can win... and the clock is running down. The storm begins.

Making your Character Anything goes for making your character... almost. Your character must have qualities that can be described by these guidelines, and cannot have superhuman abilities unless I approve them beforehand.

Name: Anything, just not leet (for clarity) or your real name (for security reasons).
Appearance (eyes, hair, etc.): Keep it within bounds of reason.
General Description: Try not to make your character's personality too insane or such. Background or history for your character is optional.
Personal Weapons/Tools: Anything within the bounds of technology can be used. However, you may not use a god-moddy weapon.
Affiliation: Choices are: Otherwise, Alert, Government (if you choose Government, specify which country) and Other (if your character is neutral).

Copyable Character Sheet

Name:
Gender:
Appearance and Ethnicity:
General Description:
Personal Weapons/Tools:
Affiliation:

NPCs

Name: Geso Arrhakas
Gender: Male.
Appearance and Ethnicity: Tall and thin, with silver hair. True ethnicity unknown.
General Description: Geso Arrhakas rose from complete obscurity - nobody knows his birthplace - to become the head of Otherwise. He quickly advanced the frontiers of science, creating medicines that put their predecessors out of production and even affordable stealth technology. The things that Otherwise created under his presidency raised the standards of the chemical and pharmaceutical industries more quickly than any time before. The company also has become a kind of "cure-all" - you name it, and there'll be a branch of Otherwise specializing in it (excepting illegal activity). It is the Monitoring section that discovered the impending WWIII. He, for unknown reasons, hates Star Wars.
Personal Weapons/Tools: He never carries a certain weapon or tool. Anything he uses, he is testing for his company.
Affiliation: Otherwise.

Name: Qresa Kresann
Gender: Female.
Appearance and Ethnicity: Of average height, with dark hair. Her ethnicity is unknown.
General Description: Over the years, Qresa Kresann rose through the ranks of Alert, from a field reporter to its head. Under her guidance, Alert became more far-reaching and aware than ever before. Now they store every piece of information that is important to a global view. They have also gained their freedom from any government affiliation or control, which was their last barrier to information-gathering. They operate several news programs worldwide, which broadcast many stories that other news companies have not found, but she keeps access to some of the most important stories to herself.
Personal Weapons/Tools: Usually uses no weapons, but will carry an arsenal of daggers when needed.
Affiliation: Alert.

Name: Wiley Proudman
Gender: Male.
Appearance and Ethnicity: Slightly short, with wiry brown hair. Is American.
General Description: Wiley Proudman was the popular mayor of a small city for several years. He worked in construction for a short time afterwards, but eventually ran for the office of US President and won. He is now in the first year of his second term as President. He is an honest and skilled public speaker, and has won support and admiration from many of his remaining opponents. Under his leadership, the United States, which had been declining in power and influence for decades, is slowly regaining its former power. However, it is also garnering an increasing amount of resentment from other countries as it competes with them and gathers a large military force. He strongly believes that military force is a necessity for the security of the US, and is amassing both offensive and defensive forces and weaponry. He is a good leader and public speaker, and those who support him are many in number.
Personal Weapons/Tools: A variety of strange and very dangerous firearms.
Affiliation: US Government.

OOC: And off we go!

IC:

Geso Arrhakas reclined in his old, unassuming office chair behind his large lacquered desk, mulling over the unfortunate news he had been given. It was the same thing he had suspected for months; a Third World War was brewing, and perhaps not even Otherwise could defuse it.

Obviously, no options were perfect, though Otherwise was investigating plenty of them. However, he thought, perhaps buying up all weapons-related stocks and items Otherwise could ferret out would work. Providing weapons to all factions involved would be too messy; it would hurt Otherwise’s sales, and probably kill most of their customers and staff. No, he decided, confiscating or buying all the weapons would be better.

But how to do it, then? He couldn’t very well buy all the weapons owned by governments, and Alert would have a fit if he tried to buy all privately owned self-defense weapons – they knew the war was coming, too, and they cared more about the welfare of common people than preventing the war itself. Perhaps it was simply best to try and protect Otherwise’s most important people and investigate some of the other options.

He sighed. So be it, then. He leaned forward and clicked the button on his computer that would send out an automated reminder to all of his Security Heads.

It was only a matter of time…

IC:

Wilhelm Kutznez walked briskly through the main hall, pushing out of his way two scientists.
As they frowned, he continued through the maze of corridors and ended up in a small room with a desk, a coat rack, and a laptop still glowing.
Hanging up his stark black trenchcoat, he sat down in a chair behind the desk.
There was a red box on his screen.
It read "YOU'VE GOT MAIL; 2 Messages"

He skimmed through the first of the two, which was a report of a faulty reactor chamber which had set off some alarms.
The second was much more interesting.
It was from the boss.

Kutznez smiled and clicked on the title to open it up.

Sol Felenit slowly walked through a small town in Illinois. He noticed blood on the brick walls of a back alley. Windows of shops and homes were broken, signifying that robberies were frequent in this town.

"This country's falling apart," he muttered to himself. "It's just a matter of time before the whole world does."

"Hey, you," a voice came from behind him. He turned around to see a man in his mid-thirties walking towards him; with a gun in his hand. "You're not from around here are you?"

"No, I'm not. Now leave me alone, I'm just passing by."

The man cocked his gun and pointed it at Sol. "You got a lotta nerve talkin' to me like that. And that ain't very good for the likes of you."

The man began to squeeze the trigger, when in a flash, Sol unsheathed his sword and sliced through the gun. He then brought the sword down onto the mans arm, causing the man to scream in pain.

"Why?" the man cried. "Why would you do that?"

Sol sighed. "Because you were about to shoot me. Now you can't shoot anyone. Have niced day."

The man fell to the ground and cursed Sol. But Sol ignored him and continued on his way.

"Some day soon," Sol muttered as he exited the town and carried on like normal. "But not soon enough."

PostSubject: Re: RPG: Farsight   RPG: Farsight EmptyFri Jul 30, 2010 12:37 am

IC: Victor Coal was in a slump.

He pulled the brass lever on his mechine again. Inside the vase-shaped glass container, a yellow beam appeared, jutting out of the core generator. It edged along, moving at a snail's pace. Yawning, Victor let the lever lax, and the beam quickened until it hit the mirror on the other side of his device.

Once, he would have been thrilled at breaking the laws of physics; slowing the speed of light. Now, he was just bored.

Opening his old laptop, he reved up Mozilla Firefox 3. He tapped on the keyboard as the internet slowly opened. He checked his e-mail, but found nothing of interest... just a load of spam messages. Nothing, of course, from Otherwise.

Victor sighed. Without employment, he would have no money left to fund his expeirements. He could continue working on his wormhole generator, of course, but he had just sent in his latest research, and Otherwise hadn't even e-mailed back. They musy know he was incapable...

He stopped.

Otherwise knew he had trouble getting his inventions done. They had his research... what if they had scientists working on his project even now?...

Impossible. Unthinkable.

But maybe... He shouldn't do this. It was paranoid. It was dangerous. It was illegal. He could get arrested...

He opened an Otherwise website and launched a window of Otherwise Soft; the softwear that had put all other code languages out of buisness. It was ironic, really, for an Otherwise employee to use an Otherwise product to hack the Otherwise database...

What was this? A message, sent by Geso Arrhakas himself, to his security managers? Surely, that was unimportant... nothing under "Wormhole", though... and if Mr. Arrhakas himself took the time to write it...

Victor Coal opened the e-mail. He read it. He re-read it. He read it over and over, thinking it was a joke, thinking it was a typo.

At last, he clicked out of Otherwise Soft and the hacked Otherwise e-mail datasphere. He pushed away from his desk in his wheeled chair, staring at the ceiling, with three words buzzing in his Autistic mind.

World. War. Three.

Wilhelm sighed and rubbed his gloved hands together.
Spinning in his chair, the only light shining on him was from a small window on the left wall.

To all Security Managers...

The words replayed in his head, just as they had when he read them.
Talk of threats.
Danger.

And most importantly, those last three words, echoing through the Guard's head.

World. War. Three.

"Oh god." he muttered, leaning forward, placing his hands together and leaning his head on them.

"A war."

A minute passed while he thought of the possibilities.
As one of the more prominent heads of security, Geso had spoken with him in last week's meeting privately.
His boss had suggested buying all weapons as a possibility.

For the next three days, he and two other guards had worked up a small list of private owners of guns.
It was incomplete, but fairly sufficient. He had just sent it in before leaving the office for his coffee break.

And now this.

The computer shut off suddenly, making him jump.

"Unf." he muttered aloud, walking over to the coat rack.
After he got his stark black cloak on, Wilhelm went to the draw next to his desk.

Quickly, he holstered an Anaconda Silver, making sure the pistol was fully loaded.
As a cloud covered the sun breifly, sunglasses slipped onto the guard's head and he walked out the door.

"World War Three..." he muttered, shutting the door behind him.

IC:

Qresa Kresann could not help but be a little amused. It may have strange, but it was so.

She had quietly gotten a copy of Geso Arrhakas's security message - poor man, she thought briefly, he can hardly send anything without it being found - and laughed at how late it was. Perhaps he was simply cautious in sending anything out, but still. She had suspected it for long enough. But it was now that even Otherwise was concerned that she knew she had to make her move.

She tapped out a standard message and sent it through Alert's security semi-relay system. Only she and few others knew the actual code to the messages, though useless speculation went around elsewhere. Of course, this one hardly needed any coding, but it never hurt to be careful.

Code:
Mg-WL-Dc-WW[-1]+[+4]-Hry--QK

We'll see how those military-minded leaders defend themselves then, she thought, and walked out of the Central Messaging Hub.

IC: Sol Felenit emerged from a forest he had been walking through for quite some time now. Surprisingly, he found himself at an Otherwise base.

"This just gets better and better," Sol sighed.

It was 2:00 AM, most of the people at the base were asleep. All that was left were a few sleepy guards. Looking around the base, he spied an V-22 Osprey.

That's just what I need, Sol thought. But how am I going to get to it?

He went silently for a closer look, and noticed that the guards were slowly nodding off. He took the chance and jumped into the aircraft and started it up. One of the guards took notice and ran towards him.

"Hey," the guard said. "You can't take that!"

"Try me," Sol replied as he slung out his .22 MAG and shot the guard twice in the chest. He lifted off as the guard fell to the ground. Sol set course for Russia.

OOC: Well, it's time we continued this. :P Tobi, is the Osprey a helicopter or a jet? Also, I'd like to note that Geso Arrhakas takes security pretty seriously, even if his guards can't always be trusted. With that said...

IC:

With the shots ringing out and the slight humming as the Osprey lifted off, it didn't take long before one of the remaining guards jumped back into action.

As the other guards woke confusedly or tried unsuccessfully to activate the remote caller for the jet, he snapped his fingers at the voice-activated dispatch, which sparked to life. He spoke into it.

"Mr. Kutznetz, sir. Armed man broke into the base. He appears to have been alone. Possibly paramilitary, though that's unlikely. One of us tried to directly stop him, and was shot twice. The weapon was a .22 MAG at close range. We're not sure if he'll make it. He's being treated. We're still able to track the vehicle, though that ability may not last.

I await your further command on whether to retrieve it."

The circuits in the voice-activated dispatch coded the message at blinding speed, and sent it through the Security subnet.

OOC: Next time, besides continuing the rest of the stuff, I hope to do something with Wiley Proudman.

OOC: (V-22 Osprey)

IC:

Slipping into his coat, Wilhelm quickened his pace down the hallway.
Not stopping until he reached the elevator that would take him down a floor and outside to the area formerly holding an Osprey, the chief spoke clearly into the dispatch.
"I want that man treated for, right away... And do try to get back the Osprey. Those things aren't cheap."

As the elevator door opened with a Ding, Wilhelm had a brilliant thought.

"Can you still track the course of the Osprey? We may be able to apprehend the man... Paramilitary or not, we'll have him in our grasp soon enough."

Wilhelm practically sprinted down the hallway, weaving in and out of scientists as he made his way to the area.

OOC: Thanks, AF.

IC:

The guard received his reply quickly enough, and rattled off another report.

"He's being treated now, sir. It looks like he'll live. We're still able to track the Osprey, though we don't know how long that'll last. He's headed east-northeast at the moment. Should we initiate pursuit, sir?"

OOC: Not a problem. LETS HEAR SOME PROUDMAN.
IC:

Wilhelm paused, uncertainly.
"Are there any Alert facilities he may cross paths with?" he asked in a slightly brooding tone.
Wilhelm really did not like having to deal with the reporters. The bright lights, flashing cameras, endless gossip...
It really disgusted him.
His lip curled back in a grimace. If this intruder was with Alert, he would suffer for it.

IC: One autistic inventor couldn't stop an impending war, even if he had broken the laws of physics several times.

Victor Coal was pacing in his hallway, the way he often did; running from door to door, his hands flapping wildly. And intruder would think he was off his rocker, and they'd probably be right. But Victor's mind was buzzing, thinking of any possible thing he could do during this war - and the possibilities were suprisingly numerous.

He recalled watching an old version of "The Time Traveler". He had considered writing a version of his own, but forgot about it about halfway through until a virus ate it up last year.

The Time Traveler himself was showing his Time Machine to several of his friends; they tried to talk him out of continuing his expirements, reminding him of the uncoming war and how scientists like him would be needed to develop weapons.

Scientists like him.

Victor ran to his wormhole generator. So far, he couldn't use it to do squat.

Perhaps he could use it to blow something up.

IC:

Wiley Proudman looked out his window, contemplating the mostly-well-kept grounds of the Vantage House. The paint on the walls outside was no longer quite white, and had not been for years. As the famous building was more a neutral gray, it had been decades since it had been referred to as the White House.

He looked back down at his half-finished speech, lying on his antique lacquered desk, the grain fine and smooth under the finish. The speech would have to be something honest, something simple. The people liked that. So did he. But something awful was brewing, he knew. And the worst news was always both simple and terrible, always had been. He couldn't be entirely straight with everyone, not this time.

"All the governments are watching each other out the corners of their eyes, while they fiddle with weapons under the not-quite-round table." Proudman only said that in private, to as few people as he could. He didn't want Alert latching on to him. But as far as he knew, what he said was true. Mistrust was rising among the countries of the world again, if not their people. That could lead to something worse. Still, no big news had come in lately. Nothing. It was suspicious. Even Alert was keeping mostly quiet about the international tension.

Funny, thought Proudman, not alerting people yet. He refocused his eyes on his speech script, realizing he had been staring into the distance. If he wanted his speech done anytime soon, he'd have to actually work on it.

OOC: See if you guys can find the "shoutout" reference in this post to one of my old stories. :P Probably only SI and AF have seen it, but I'm guessing Morgoth had a chance to see it too. The story, that is.

IC:

Qresa Kresann paused by her undersized house's large coated-glass window. The garden outside was overgrown... she knew she should probably do something to keep it in check, but nothing seemed invasive among the plants, and the neighbors hadn't complained about the resident birds.

She turned back to the screen of her favorite antique computer, which her uncle had recently bought her as a present. The customarily coded Alert message displayed there had just arrived through the Multiweb.

The sender had found a subsequent trace on a copy of Geso Arrhakas's message to Otherwise's Security. He had tracked it back to a mostly-forgotten inventor in London, Victor Coal. The message was only a question to Kresann, asking whether he should seek out this Coal person and keep an eye on him, as the inventor apparently was capable of breaking through to Otherwise as well as Alert could.

Of course, thought Qresa Kresann, firing back an affirmative reply on the rather quaint plastic keyboard. I can't see much coming out of it, but it couldn't hurt to follow up on any information.

OOC: Okay, so it's been a LONG time since I promised I would do Proudman's speech. I can't even remember how long. But now that it's up, please tell me whether this is actually good presidential material or not. :P I may revise it.

IC:

"People," began Wiley Proudman. "Citizens of this great country.

"We are privileged to live in a world of opportunity, of expanded horizons and communications. Our own history proves it was not always this way. The greatest of our leaders have inevitably been those who safely brought our country through times of turmoil.

"And despite the times we live in now, times our forerunners could never have imagined possible, we are faced with the beginnings of more prospects of unrest. I have said before that we cannot be too vigilant, and I say it again now. Our world is changing, and we must be on our guard.

"But we can make this a change for the better. Even were we faced with war, we could and would still hope for a new dawn - a greater future for our posterity than the present that we have inherited. I am initiating new security for our nation, but we must never be so foolish as to do ill to our global neighbors.

"With this always in our mind, we can ensure that our world will be in good hands."
